Erste Ausgabe. - Vicomte de Marcellus, 1795-1865, war Angehöriger der französischen Botschaft in Konstantinopel, wo er..bis 1820 lebte. In dieser Zeit bereiste er zahlreiche griechischen Inseln, Athen, Zypern, Smyrna und Ägypten. Auf einer dieser Reisen entdeckte er die berühmte Statue der Venus von Milo, was er in Band 1, Kapitel VIII ausführlich beschreibt. - The present work, an account of his early travels, was written in his retirement (as were all his books), twenty years after the events it describes."
