"The sense of matière is a fundamental to Clavé's graphic work as to his painting. Chalk, brush, razor-blade, finger-tip all are evident in his inspired lithographs for Candide (1948), a text that the artist had always wanted to illustrate. There is scarcely a facet of Voltaire's satire that Clavé has not illuminated, from the tender portrait of the ingenious Candide" (Strachan 110).
