Reich illustrierte Anatomie; dieses große Unternehmen wurde von dem Prof. der Anatomie an der Univ. Toulouse Bonamy und dem berühmten Paul Broca, einer der bedeutendsten Chirurgen und Anthropologen Frankreichs im 19. Jhdts., u. a. Entdecker des Sprachzentrums ("Broca's centre"), veranstaltet. "This outstanding work, illustrated with handcolored lithographs, is highly regarded for the technical perfection of its illustrations. It was probably intended to complement the 'Anatomie descriptive' by Jean Cruveilhier, which was first published in four volumes in 1834-36, with a second edition beginning in 1843. Cruveilhier's text, which was influential on the progress of anatomical studies at the Ecole de Médecine at Paris, had no illustrations. The Bonamy-Broca-Beau atlas, with over two hundred and 50 colored lithographed and engraved plates after drawings by Emile Beau, one of the foremost anatomical illustrators of the nineteenth century, began to be issued in the early 1840s. The French titles do not reflect any association with Cruveilhier; however, an English translation of the first volume of the Bonamy atlas was published in 1844 in London by Bailliere, and the title-page of this English edition clearly associates the atlas with Cruveilhier's anatomy, stating that the anatomy is by Cruveilhier, the plate explanation by Bonamy, and the illustrations after Beau" (Anatomy as Art: the Dean Edell Collection No. 179). "Bonamy prepared Volume I on osteology, syndesmology, and myology as well as Volume II on the heart, arteries, veins, lymphatics, and aponeuroses. Broca prepared Volume III on the digestive and endocrine systems and Volume IV on the genitourinary and respiratory systems. The 254 colored plates were engraved by Èmile Beau, and each has a facing page containing the descriptive information" (Heirs of Hippocrates³ 1775). - Stellenw. etw. stockfl. und wasserrandig.
