Thus Charles represents such unlikely defendants as poverty, ugliness, emprisonment, war, ignorance, and women-attempting to prove that they are superior to men. This last example shows the profound wisdom of the work. The work was one of Charles Estienne's most popular productions, and it is for that reason that early editions are today as rare as the work was popular in its day."
