Open Carefully. Artist Book - Designed, Assembled and Painted by Richard Tuttle. New York, Sperone Westwater, 2000. This object blurs the boundaries among book, catalogue and multiple. It consists of a hand-painted plastic container clam shell in shape. There are two compartments within this oval. The first an inside compartment holds five colored pebbles, the other an outside compartment holds a miniature booklet with ten images of recent sculpture by Richard Tuttle. "Open Carefully" is completed by a fan of five printed paper strands that connect the booklet in its outside compartment of the underside of the object at the outside of the inside compartment.
The artist confounds our usual notions of in, out, top and bottom with this object. This object was produced in association with the artist's gallery exhibition. The ten sculptures pictured in the miniature book were exhibited at the Whitney Biennial in spring 2000. Limited to an edition of 1000. Signed by Richard Tuttle.
