Hoover 160; Barbier IV, 785 (mentions Pierre Cartier as co-author); Nissen ZBI 498 (Den Haag edition). - First edition of this work composed mainly by the Swiss naturalist, geologist Louis Bourguet in collaboration with Pierre Cartier. - It is one of the major treatises in the history of geology. Dedicated to Réaumur, it is divided into two parts. The first part begins with a discourse on the origin of fossils and continues with a succession of letters or memoirs relating to Bourguet's previous work, Lettres philosophiques. The second part proposes the classification of fossils followed by indexes giving respectively a list of the main published works on fossils, the main fossil sites in the world and an explanation of the plates. The book is illustrated with 441 figures on 60 folding plates. Bourguet was a student of Scheuchzer and Vallisneri. - Contemporary mottled calf, spine on raised bands gilt and with label. Rubbed, corners scuffed, head of spine worn, hinges split at ends. Toned throughout.
