Lalande 436: "Cet ouvrage contient des savantes recherches sur la théorie de la figure de la terre, et le détail des observations faites pour la mesure du degré du Perou". - Erste Ausgabe. - Der Mathematiker und Physiker Pierre Bouguer war 1736 zusammen mit Godin und La Condamine nach Peru gesandt worden. Hauptergebnis der Expedition war die Bestätigung der Abplattung der Erde. In dem vorliegenden Werk - "ouvrage remarquable" (Hoefer) - publizierte Bouguer die Resultate seiner Berechnungen. Die Tafeln zeigen die Kordilleren in Profil- und Panoramaansicht, ein Messinstrument, Messmethoden und eine Karte des Meridians von Quito. - First edition of Bouguer's report on the geodetic expedition to Peru that was to measure an arc of the meridian near the equator. Bouguer's fellow scientists on the expedition were La Condamine, Godin and Jussieu. "The scientific result of the expedition was clear: the earth is indeed a spheroid flattened at the poles, as Newton had maintained. Bouger and La Condamine were unable, however, to agree on the joint publication of their works. Their long quarrel continued through a series of memoirs that were essentially mutual refutations of no scientific value; it ceased only with the death of Bouger in 1758". - Contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt and with label. Corners slightly bumped. title abit foxed, toning in places. Erased stamp on title.
