Der Autor war einer der Überlebenden des Princess of Wales- Unglückes im Jahre 1820 und verbrachte mit sechs Kameraden ca. zwei Jahre auf einer der Crozet-Inseln, bis sie von einem amerikanischen Schiff entdeckt wurden.
