Seltene erste Ausgabe des bedeutenden Werkes, in dem Lamarck u.a. zum erstenmal seine Anpassungstheorie äußert, d.h. annimmt, daß mit dem Auftauchen neuer äußerer Bedingungen sich die Organismen selbst ändern. Im Gegensatz zur bis dahin vertretenen Ansicht von der Konstanz der Arten wurde er damit zum Begründer der Deszendenztheorie. "In this work L. sets forth his views on the immutability of species and attacks the theory of spontaneous origin of life. The book is interesting in the history of chemistry, because Lamarck attacks Lavoisier's anti-phlogistic theory" (Duveen). - "L's. ,Recherches'... was one of his early speculative works.
