Sinkankas 3484. Erste Ausgabe. - "A tedious examination of various opinions that have been expressed concerning the identity of the subject portrayed upon an engraved gem in the Russian imperial cabinet, with Koehler carefully refuting all such opinions but then offering his own novel interpretation. The gem itself, given as an oriental' amethyst, probably a sapphire, depicts a young man's head, laurel-crowned" (Sinkankas p. 559). Koehler (1765-1838) war Kaiserlicher Hofrat, Direktor des kaiserlichen Antiken-Kabinetts und Bibliothekar des Zaren. - Vors. etw. fl., sonst sauber u. ordentlich. - First and only edition. Cont. marbled calf, black label to spine. Flat spine richly gilt. Gilt edges. Marbled endpapers. Headcap slightly damaged. A nice copy.
