Während seiner Zeit als Leiter des Botanischen Gartens der East India Company in Kalkutta besuchte er Penang, Singapur und Burma. "At the Calcutta garden Wallich trained native artists to make botanical drawings,... Nearly all the illustrations in the 'Plantae Asiaticae Rariores' are the work Indian draughtsmen, and are so vivid and vigorous that they make most other plant-drawings look insipid by comparison" (Alice M.
