Cf. Ganado, 62. Karow, Mapmakers of the Sixteenth Century and Their Maps 88/11. Stylianou, The History of the Cartography of Cyprus 53. - - Engraved map of the Island with inset map of central Europe and Mediterranean: "1570 Dar Thayl Europe had ich hie bey verdaychnet, damit ein yeder sehen kan, wo Cypern und Corfu und Candia Rodis Malta andere Ort mer lige". Unterer Rand mit mehren Randrissen tls. in die Karte hinein. Einige kl. Randeinrisse in d. anderen w. Rändern. Stark gebräunt u. tls. fleckig. Unten rechts quer in die kleine Inletkarte hinein, weiße Streifen, wohl geglättete Quetschfalte. - - One of a series of rare broadsheet maps and plans by this important German mapmaker relating to contemporary events in the struggle between Turks and Christians for mastery of the eastern Mediterranean. - The Venetian republic refused to cede Cyprus to Turkey and Selim II sent a fleet under Admiral Piale Pasha together with an army of 50,000 men under General Lala Mustafa to seize Cyprus. The Turkish commanders debated whether to attack Famagusta or Nicosia first. Lala Mustafa decided that, as Nicosia was the key to the island, it should be captured before help could arrive from Europe. The Turkish fleet appeared off Paphos on 1 July 1570, and Nicosia was taken on the 9 September after a siege of forty-five days; Famagusta fell almost a year later on the 1 August 1571. This spectacular map of the island has numerous vignettes full of action and is a fine example of the study of military and naval warfare. It combines Cyprus's geographical position with a historical perspective on contemporaneous events in Europe involving the Christian and the Turks. Contemporary German broadsheet maps of the attack on Cyprus are significantly rarer than the equivalent maps by their Italian counterparts, the so-called 'Lafreri-school' and yet were equally important in their role as "news-maps" disseminating the unfolding events for a contemporary audience. - Lower margin with several tears partly into the map. Several small tears in the other white margins. Rather browned, some stains. From below right white stripes laterally into the inlet map, probably straightened fold.
