The original edition of this very popular handbook on designing and planning a beautiful garden, commonly called pleasure-garden, and the lay-out of the grounds according to geometrical principles and the law of perspective, was published in 1709 by Jean Mariette in Paris. "Remains to this day the standard authority on the formal garden. It was written by d'Argenville the elder, under the instructions and supervision of the architect, J. B. A.
