Church 110. - Sehr seltene erste Ausgabe, leider ohne die Holzschnitt-Karte. - Among the pre-Columbian discoverers of America, the brothers Nicolò and Antonio Zeno occupy perhaps the most prominent place. It is claimed that towards the end of the fourteenth century, they visited several islands which they called Frisland, Esland (Iceland), Engroveland (Greenland) and Icaria. The account of these voyages first appears in this volume (on ff. 45-58), published anonymously but which appears to ha ve been compiled by Nicolò Zeno, the younger. Is this narrative the most famous hoax in Arctic history - or perhaps a sensationally true account of the Zeno brothers' voyages in the late 14th century to the Faroe islands, Iceland, Greenland and Labrador? In the narrative Nicolò i.a. describes finding in East Greenland many things which later explorers did not discover: a populous settlement of Eskimos, a monastery of Catholic friars, volcano in eruption, hot springs with which the friars heated their houses and the church, and summer shippin g connections with Scandinavia and Spitsbergen. This has been considered quite fantastic and even false. Yet during the last century the evidence for all of these has been found there (see Lauge Koch, The geology of East Greenland, 1929, p. 192; D. Mel. Johnson, Observations on the Eskimo remains on the east coast of Greenland between 72 and 75 North Latitude, 1933; and Helga Larsen, Dodemandsbugten, an Eskimo settlement on Clavering Island, 1934). - Tls. stockfleckig, einige Ecken geknickt. Hs. Besitzvermerke a. T. Exlibris.
