Lowndes II, 1440-41. - Zweite Ausgabe dieses berühmten Standardwerkes mit den gleichen Illustrationen wie die 1811 erschienene Erstausgabe. Mit einer großen Ansicht von Reykiavik, ferner von Havnefiord, die Hekla und der große Geysir in Tätigkeit u.a. - Tls. stockfleckig (vereinzelt etw. stärker), ansonsten gutes u. breitrandiges Ex. Exlibris. - First edition was published in 1811, the second edition was slightly revised and a short account of the Revolution of 1809 was added to the Appendix. Sir Mackenzie (1780-1848) was accompanied by Henry Holland and Richard Bright. Travels in the island of Iceland is the joint production of the three travellers. To this work Mackenzie contributed the narrative of the voyage and the travels, and the chapters on the mineralogy, rural economy, and commerce of the island. Although the scientific portions of the book have long been superseded, it contains much information of permanent interest on the social and economic condition of Iceland (DNB). There is considerable information concerning the zoology, botany and mineralogy of Iceland, as well as appendices on literature, commerce, diseases, music, etc. The fine hand-coloured aquatints of scenery and costume and other plates are based on original sketches by the three travellers. - Foxed in places due to the tissues for the plates, but the coloured plates nearly clean.
