Nissen, BBI 935. Pritzel 4285. - H. war Leibarzt von Kaiser Franz I., auf seinen Vorschlag wurde 1793 am Belvedere ein botanischer Garten angelegt, den er bis zu seinem Tode leitete. "Sein Werk über die Gräser besticht durch die ausgezeichneten Abbildungen" (österr. Biogr. Lex.). - Unbeschnittenes, breitrandiges u. ungewöhnlich sauberes Ex. - 3 of 4 volumes. Nissen BBI 935. With altogether 300 hand-coloured copper-engravings. Contemporary half-leather bindings with gilt red spines & marbled paper on boards. - Volume IV with 100 plates missing. First and only edition of this finest platebook on Austrian grasses. N. Host (1761-1834) was physician of Franz I and director of the botanical garden in Vienna founded by the same emperor on his advice. - Very nice and clean copy with wide margins.
