Buenos Aires u. eine weitere, mit 2 übereinanderliegenden Ansichten von Montevideo. Ferner Szenen aus dem Leben der Indianer u. Gauchos. - Rep. Randeinrisse in den Rändern u. Ecken der S. a1-B2. text u. 15 Taf. wasserrandig (2 Taf. bis in die Abb.). Abklatsch des Textes auf 6 Taf. - First edition, one of 750 copies, of one of the few notable colorplate books devoted to Argentina and Uruguay. The work was originally published in six monthly parts, with Ackermann advertising 750 small paper copies (on "elephant" paper) and 50 on large paper. Born about 1788, Vidal joined the Royal Navy in 1808 where he served as a purser for over fifty years. He accompanied the Portuguese royal family to South America, and from 1820 to 1821, served as secretary to Admiral Lambert at St. Helena. His sketches, as published here, were part of Ackermann's master plan to offer numerous Spanish and South American views to eager English buyers. Over 3,000 British subjects had settled in Buenos Aires by 1824. - Neatly closed tears along gutter and lower inside corners of leaves a1-B2, some marginal dampstaining to text and 15 plates (touching images of 2 plates), text offsetting to 6 plates, some pigment offsetting from plates to text. - Modern half brown morocco.
