Sehr seltene erste Ausgabe, nicht im JAP 1950ff. - "This is the first comprehensive survey of the law of elastic and inelastic impact, and their application to various physical problems" (DSB). Edme Mariotte, Prior von St. Martin sous Beaune b. Dijon wurde schon 1666 kurz nach deren Gründung in die "Académie des Sciences" aufgenommen. Sein Forschungsgebiet umfasste die Mechanik, Physik, Optik, Physiologie und Botanik. Er formulierte das Gesetz über die Kompressibilität der Gase, das noch heute nach ihm benannt ist. Seine Arbeiten gründeten sich auf Experimente und im vorliegenden Werk wendet er sich gegen Descartes. "He made full use of the results obtained by his predecessors and contemporaries... Clearly, he knew of the work of Wallis, Wren, and Huygens... and there are enough striking similarities between Mariotte's treatise and Huygens' then unpublished paper on impact... to suggest that he knew the content of the latter, perhaps verbally from Huygens himself... Mariotte could have learned about Huygens' ideas from the latter's public lectures, which could have been seen as public information.
