De Belder 378: "A rare and splendid Hungarian flora, this is a typical product of the Golden Age of Viennense botany..." The text is by Kitaibel; Waldstein provided the financial backing for its publication". - "Zur Zeit Jacquins noch entstand ferner das Prachtwerk ungarischer Pflanzen, welches ein Mitglied des Grafengeschlechts der Waldstein zusammen mit dem Botaniker Kitaibel zum Autor hat. Die vorzüglichen Abbildungen stammen von Johann Schütz" (Nissen 186). - Breitrandiges, ungewöhnlich sauberes, nur vereinzelt leicht fingerfleckiges Ex. Die Taf. 15 mit gr. Einriss u. mit Knichfalten, Taf. 100 mit Einriss. - Nissen BBI 2096. On p. I sepia aquatint (a view) by Hirscher (213 x 300 mm) and 200 hand-coloured copper-engravings (11 double-page) by Karl Schutz after drawings of his son Johann. - Double plates no 15 torn and crumpled; vol III containing pp 222-310 and plates no. 201-280 missing.. Very rare first edition of the momumental work on Hungarian flora (covering also the area of today's Slovakia, Transylvania and Croatia). Text by Paul Kitaibel (1757-1817), professora of botany on the Pest university, whose collections of botanical and mineralogica samples based the natural historical collection of the Hungarian National Museum. The work was financed by the Count Franz Waldstein (1759-1823), Austrian general,who fouhgt against the Turcs and North-African states as the Knight of St. John, in Austrian.Turkish war and Prussian campaign. Since 1789 he devoted himself to the botany and traveled in order to collect the plants together with Kitaibel the Hungary. His herbary is to be found in Prague today. The whole work had to contain four volumes originally but its publication was interrupt due to the Napoleonian wars.
