Phillips propagierte zum Anfang der Regierungszeit von Königin Victoria eine Abkehr vom neoklassizitischen Regency Stil zu einer Hinwendung zum Eklektizismus, wobei er auch japanische und Hindu-Ornamentik einführt. Bemerkenswertes Vorlagenbuch zur bestimmenden Ornamentik des späten 19. Jahrhunderts.
