Tooley 208. - Erste Ausgabe. - Ziel der Gesandtschaftsreise war eine Verbesserung der Handelsbeziehungen zwischen Großbritannien und China. Dies scheiterte wegen diplomatischer Differenzen. Da Lord Amhersts sich weigerte den Kaiser mit dem traditionellen Kou-Tau zu begrüßen und deshalb keine Audienz erhielt, musste die Gesandtschaft nach England zurückkehren. Als Forschungsexpedition brachte die Reise jedoch zahlreiche neue Erkenntnisse. Auf der Rückfahrt wurde vor allem die bis dahin unbekannte Westküste Koreas bereist und kartographiert. - Die schönen Tafeln mit Ansichten: "Summer Palace of the Emperor, opposite the City of Tien-Sing", "Anchorage at Tong-Chow", "Temple of Quan-Yin-Mun, near Nankin", "See-Lang-Shan", "Gan-Kin-Foo, from the West", "Seaou-Koo-Shan, from the East" und "View, Island of Pulo Leat". - Deckel mit passendem patinierten Japanpapier bezogen, Gelenke und Ecken etwas berieben, Innengelenke mit Leinenstreifen verstärkt, die gefaltete Karte oben mit größerem Ausschnitt am Falz (Bildverlust "Ocean"), stellenweise etwas stockfleckig, Vorsätze, Frontispiz u. Titel stärker, die Tafeln meist nur im w. Rand etwas fleckig, gutes Exemplar.
