Verf.-Widm.: "from the author". - This memoir, in which Stokes coined the word fluorescence, "forms a landmark in optical science... and really indicated the line of reasoning which has become so fruitful and suggestive in his (Stokes') own hands and those of other eminent natural philosophers... The whole theory of light entered upon a new phase" (Merz).
