Borro,G.

Del flusso, e reflusso del mare, et dell'inondatione del nilo. La terza volta ricorretto dal proprio autore. 8° (163 x 109 mm). 16 Bl., 220 S. Mod. Prgt.

USTC 816442; CNCE 7175; Riccardi, p. 171; Brunet I, 1120; Sotheran 6355; DSB XV, p. 45. - Fourth revised edition, first printed at Lucca in 1561. "The work is of great interest as one of the earliest treatises on the tides" (Sotheran). Professor of philosophy at the University of Pisa when Galileo was a student there, Girolomo Borro is the author of several works, including two relevant treatises on natural philosophy - an intriguing dialogue on tides (Dialogo del flusso e reflusso del mare), and a book on the motion of heavy and light bodies (De motu gravium et levium, 1575). Borros works are important for a deeper appreciation of the Renaissance Aristotelian natural philosophy; they also provide valuable clues to reconstruct Galileos scientific training. Galileo owned Borro's work on tides in the 1577 edition (cf. DSB). - St.a.T. u. a. d. letzten 2 Bl. - Modern vellum. Scattered marginalia, partly trimmed, dampstain at lower corner, one leaf with a repaired tear. - Provenance: Marinebibliothek, stamps on title and last two leaves; Franz Pollak-Parnau, bookplate.
