Contemporary speckled boards, spine with ms. label and shelf ticket. Edges and corners somewaht rubbed and scuffed. Foxed. - First edition, rare. This is the descriptive work refered to in Lenz Mustertafeln (Jena, 1794). Volume one describes the earth's, stones, salts, organic minerals and petrifications, and volume 2 covers the metals and petrology. Johann Georg Lenz came to mineralogy as an autodidact. His career was influenced by Joh. Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832), with whom he was in close contact. Inspired by the works of Abraham Gottlob Werner, Lenz began to publish extensively on geology. He was in charge of the geological collection of Johann Ernst Immanuel Walch at the university, became ducal inspector, secretary of mining, and finally Grand-Ducal-Saxony-Weimar counsellor of mines (Bergrat) in 1803.
