In the 1750's excavation at Avanches (i.e. Aventicum, the Roman capital of Switzerland) brought to light many new objects, including an outstanding mosaic floor; and in 1758 a large Roman estate discovered at Ober-Kulm (near Lenzburg) was excavated under the direction of the author. - Friedrich Samuel von Schmidt (1737-1796), born at Berne, originally became a theologian, then turned to archeological studies. - Unbeschnittenes Ex., tls. randrissig.
