Sitwell/Blunt S. 128. - Eines der meist gefeierten und nachgebildeten Blumenwerke, das die wichtigsten Rosen seiner Zeit abbildet und beschreibt. - Zweite Ausg. des schönen Rosenbuches u. die erste Oktavausg. mit neuen Taf., in 40 Lieferungen erschienen. Die begleitenden Texte erläutern u. a. Herkunft, Blüte und Verwendung in den Gärten. - Die erste Ausg. erschien 1817-24 in Folio. - "Les figures réduites et gravées de nouveau par les plus habiles artistes, seront toutes également bien coloriées sous les yeux de M. Redouté" (Verlagsprospekt). - "In the introduction to the Schutter facsimile Sir George Taylor quotes Gisèle de la Roche's observation 'Redouté and Thory knew, described and figured almost all the important roses known in their day. Included were many of the key ancestors of our present-day-roses. The plates in Les Roses have artistic value, botanical and documentary value, both for the species and culticars still surviving and for those that have disappeared" (De Belder 290 zur ersten Ausgabe). - Vorliegendes Exemplar ist jeweils durch Vortitel und Tafelverzeichnis auf Schreibpapier von alter Hand in vier Teile gegliedert. Tls. etw. gebräunt und stockfl. (die Tafeln weniger betroffen und überwieg. sauber), vereinzelt Knickspuren, 1 Tafel mit überklebtem Randeinriß. Insges. gutes und unbeschnittenes, breitrandiges Exemplar des ungewöhnlich schönen Rosenbuches. - Beautiful book of roses. First octave edition, second in all. With 160 engravings in color with retouch by P. J. Rédouté. Modern half vellum. - Text foxing and very little browned, the plates mostly clean. 1 plate with pasted marginal tear, here and there some creases. All in all good, untrimmed and wide-margined copy.
