Alphabetum Ibericum, sive Georgianum, cum oratione dominicali, salutatione angelica, symbolo fidei, praeceptis decalogi, ecclesiae sacramentis, & operibus misericordiae... Rom, Propaganda Fide 1629. 16 nn. Bl. Ohne Einband, ausgebunden.

Fine example of one of the first printed books in Georgian using movable type. In the 1620s, the Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith, the body of the Roman Catholic Church established in the early 17th century for the purpose of spreading Catholicism in non-Catholic countries, set its eyes on traditionally Orthodox Georgia. In preparation for their missionary work monks were taught Georgian by Niceforo Irbachi Giorgiano, the ambassador of the Georgian king, Teimuraz I, in Rome. Meanwhile, the sacred congregation's printers cast the first Georgian type and published a few books in Georgian in 1629, including the present alphabet, a Georgian-Italian dictionary and a prayer of Virgin Mary of Laureto. The same Rome-based printers published the first Georgian grammar in 1643. The first printing house in Georgia was established only in 1709 in Tbilisi. The text of the present work begins with the thirty-six letters of the Iberian or Georgian alphabet with their transcriptions in Latin. Some letters have additional comments on the side, providing the same phoneme in other languages including Arabic, Hebrew and Greek, entailing the use of type in five completely different alphabets on a single page. The following section explains the sounds resulting from the combination of Georgian letters. The final part of the book presents a number of religious texts in Georgian translation: The Lord's Prayer, Hail Mary, Nicene and Apostle's Creeds, Corporal Works of Mercy, The Seven Sacraments, The Ten Commandments and the Canticle of the Virgin Mary. Vgl. Brunet I, 197. - Stockfleckig, etw. gebräunt.
