Defoe,D.

The History of the Union between England and Scottand. London, Stockdale 1786. 4°. Mit gest. Portr. XXXII, 781 S. Läd. Ldr. d. Zt. (Vdeckel lose, Tls. beschabt, fl. u. best.).

Lowndes I, 613. Defoe was send to Scotland as a secret agent to work with the party favorable to the Union, which conveniently allowed him to escape his creditors in England who still persecuted him despite his submitting to the Committee for debtors in 1706. His History of the Union first appeared in 1709 and remains useful for its collection of printed documents relating to the negotiations. This edition is prefaced by a life of Defoe and "An Essay containing a few Strictures on the Union of Scotland with England, and on the present Situation of Ireland" by the constitutional historian John Louis De Lolme. The titlepage of the "Essay" is given with the year MDCCLXXXVII. The Watermark of frontpapers indicates 1795.
