For the first time the existing knowledge of comparative chemistry and physics was brought to bear upon physiological problems. The `Handbuch' was the first great text-book of physiology in the 19th century" (G.-M.). - Müller was the foremost physiologist of his day. He wrote a compendium of physiological knowledge, the Handbuch der Physiologie des Menschen (1833-1840), which served as the primary reference text in physiology for some time. In it may be found not only a presentation of the state of knowledge of physiology of the time but also many of Müller's speculations, theories, research results, and conclusions. Müller shares with von Haller the appellation "father of experimental physiology".
