Broschurdecken in den Gelenken ein wenig eingerissen, Buchblock in der Mitte gebrochen. - First edition of this milestone in the history of philosophy and linguistics. Based on the author's lectures held in the University of Geneva between 1906/07 and 1911 the book was published posthumously by de Saussure's students Charles Bally and Albert Sèchehaye. Saussure made the distinction between 'langue' (language) and 'parole' (speech). 'Langue' refers to the system of rules and conventions which is independent of, and pre-exists, individual users; 'parole' refers to its use in particular instances. Applying the notion to semiotic systems in general rather than simply to language, the distinction is one between between code and message, structure and event or system and usage. Saussure's revolutionary General Theory of Language (Cours de linguistique générale) had not only great impact on linguists such as Roman Jakobson, N. S. Trubetzkoy, Louis Hjelmslev, Leonard Bloomfield and Noam Chomsky, but particularly in France also on Philosophy (Jacques Derrida, Paul Ricoeur), Anthropology (Claude Lévy-Strauss), and Psychoanalysis (Jacques Lacan). - Browned due to paper quality, book block broken, few marginalia and underlinings in pencil.
