Zwei reich bemalte und durch einen Lederrücken verbundene Einbanddeckel aus Holz, geprägt und verziert im Stile der Sieneser Rechnungsbücher des 15. Jahrhunderts. Vorderdeckel mit Darstellung eines Heiligen, Rückdeckel mit 12 Wappendarstellungen und 12 Textzeilen, alles in Ölfarben u. punziertem Gold. Beide Deckel eingerahmt von einer floralen Bordüre auf blauem Grund, in den Ecken 4 (Rückdeckel: 3 von 4) kleine Messingbuckel, 3 Reste von 2 Eisenschließen. Siena, spätes 19. Jhdt. Fol. (ca. 38,5:28,5 cm).

Joni (in: Studies in the History of Bookbinding, S. 296 f.). - Typisches Beispiel aus einer der berühmtesten Serien von Einbandfälschungen des 19. Jhdts., ausgeführt von Icilio Federico Joni (geb. 1865 oder 1866 in Siena). Joni imitiert mit seinen Arbeiten die "Tavolette delle biccherna", Holzeinbände für die Sieneser Rechnungsbücher, die die dortigen Steuerbehörden von der Mitte des 13. bis zum Ende des 17. Jhdts. hatten anfertigen lassen (vgl. auch Loubier, Bucheinband 64 f.). Während er seine frühen Werke noch als Originale aus Mittelalter oder Renaissance an Sammler verkaufte, hat er spätere Arbeiten sogar signiert und in seiner 1932 erschienenen Autobiographie offen über die Fälschungen berichtet. Nach Foot sind insgesamt nur 18 Einbände von Joni bekannt. - Beide Deckel etwas gewölbt, Rückdeckel gebrochen. Mit künstlichen Alterungsspuren (Bereibungen u. Risse im Farbauftrag), aber auch Absplitterungen u. Beschädigungen neueren Datums. - Two painted wooden book covers joined by a leather spine, forgeries of 15th century 'Tavolette della biccherna'. Siena, late 19th century. A fine example of the work of the Sienese painter and restorer I.F. Joni, who produced imitations of the wooden panel bindings used to cover the tax accounts of Siena. The front panel depicting a Saint, rear panel with 12 coat-of-arms and 12 lines of text, surrounded with borders painted blue and embellished with floral scroll-work, punched decoration to both covers, 4 bosses on each panel (one of which missing on rear panel), 3 remnants of 2 iron clasps. - Panels warped, rubbed and chipped, rear panel cracked, part of which is certainly intentional. - JONI, Icilio Federico (1866-1946). Painted 'tavolette' book covers in Biccherna syle. [Siena: late 19th-century.] A Joni binding, by the self-professed forger, I.C. Joni, in imitation of the wooden panel bindings (Tavolette della biccherna) used to cover the accounts of Siena from the middle of the 13th to the end of the 17th centuries. Joni bindings entered undetected some of the greatest book collections, including those of Borghese, Hoe and Wilmerding, but he openly described his forgery work in his 1932 autobiography. Cf. H.M.
