Cramer 25. Mourlot 117-144. - Scarce first American edition, published the same year as the first Paris edition, of Chagall's extraordinary illustrations for the Hebrew Bible, with 105 etchings reproduced in heliogravure, as well as 12 black-and-white and 16 color lithographs prepared by Chagall especially for the present work and printed by Mourlot Frères. - In 1956, the unpublished etchings on Biblical themes that Chagall had begun for Vollard in 1930 were finally published by the Swiss publisher Teriade. Concurrently, Teriade commissioned a set of lithographs on Biblical themes for a special number of the deluxe art review Verve that included reproductions of all of Chagall's Bible etchings, including some of the most intense color lithographs that Chagall ever made.
