Cochlaeus was the son of a peasant who matriculated at the University of Cologne. He was appointed rector of the Latin school at Sankt Lorenz in Nuremberg in 1510. From 1518-1519 he was in Rome where he was ordained a priest. He returned to Germany and emerged as a widely read leading Catholic controversialist.
