Born in Termonde, Belgium, in 1898, Willy Kessels was practising photography for his own research from 1926, before devoting himself to it fully in 1931. He exhibited at the first Internationale de la Photographie at the Palais des Beaux Arts, Brussels, in 1932 alongside photographers such as Man Ray, André Kertész and Germaine Krull. In his work as a sculptor, photographer, and interior and furniture designer, he is closely linked with the 1920s avant garde.
