Erste Ausgabe. - First edition of an important work for the history of both glacial studies and alpinism. - Although Tyndall's explanations of glacial movement by fracture and regulation were not conclusive, his study of the alpine glaciers in the years 1856 to 1859 fostered a passion for mountaineering and a fascination for what was to become bis major work: the effects of solar and heat radiation on atmospheric gases. But Tyndall also became a constant visitor of the Swiss mountains and one of the most intrepid and resolute of the early English Pioneers.
