Selten gewordene zweite Ausgabe des berühmten Dialogo', a masterly defense of the Copernican hypothesis' (Sparrow). Die erste Ausg. von 1632 wurde beschlagnahmt und verbrannt, nur wenige Exemplare überdauerten. Es war diese Schrift, die zu G.s Vorladung nach Rom führte, wo der berühmte Widerruf erfolgte. - Titelbl. tls. fleckig m. gelöschtem N., wenig gebr. Schönes, breitrandiges Ex. - Entirely uncut copy and very likely a large paper copy (225 x 285 mm!) of the celebrated second edition of the Dialogo in the original Italian. Following the main body of the volume and with separate titlepages we find Galileo´s famous letter to the Grand Duchess of Tuscany explaining the interactions of sciences and scripture; the letter of Paolo Antonio Foscarini on the Copernican theory, an extract from from Kepler´s Astronomia Nova and the texts of the Cardinal´s sentence against Galileo as well as his abjuration extracted from Riccioli. The Dialogues are essentially the world system which Galilei had promised several years earlier. Although the discussion had no victor, the Copernican arguments were so strong and contrarily, those of Ptolomy so weak - or even ludicrous - that the new astronomy was obviously favored. It was for this that Galileo was brought before the Inquisitions and, after his abjuration, placed under arrest and forbidden to publish any further - for the time being (this procedere has been well preserved right up to the end of the 20th century).
