Original printed wrappers, entirely uncut. - First & only edition of what appears to be the very first German elaboration of Brown's epochal achievement, if not the very first at all. A well preserved copy albeit a little foxed throughout; entirely untrimmed edges. - Carl August S.Schultze (1795-1877) received a copy of Robert Brown's privatly printed paper of July 30, 1828 (with the imprint: Not Published) from no less a person than Alexander von Humboldt (p. 11): "Mehrere politische und wissenschaftliche Zeitschriften haben am Ende des vorigen Monats dem Publikum bekannt gemacht, was Herr R. Brown in einer nur für Freunde gedruckten Schrift: "A brief account of microscopical observations on the particles contained in the polen of plants..." einem engeren Kreise mitgetheilt hatte. Die Mitteilung "dieser Schrift verdanke ich der Güte des Herrn Al. von Humboldt". Here follows a detailed description of the contents of Brown's epochal paper and a thorough description of the author's own independent research: "Meine Versuche über diesen Gegenstand" (pp. 13-28). In the next chapters: "Von der Erzeugung der Monaden" and "Beschreibung des Verfahrens, das bei den vorstehenden Beobachtungen angewendet wird " (pp.29-38) Schultze introduces Leibniz' concept of the theory of Monads. This is the most interesting part of this publication which has remained largely unknown and has escaped the attention of all subsequent workers in this field up to the concluding work of Jean Perrin. C.A.S. Schultze was professor of anatomy and physiology at Freiburg; a member of numerous scientific societies, he is well known for his publications in comparative anatomy; his son Max Johann Sigismund Sch. is remembered eponymouly for Schultze's bundle, membrane and cells.
