His work on the subject was the most important before Pavlov" (G.-M.). - B. (1785-1853), a U.S. Army surgeon stationed at isolated Fort Mackinac in northern Michigan in 1822, attended upon a French-Canadian voyageur, Alexis St. Martin, who had been severly wounded by gunshot to the stomach. A permanent gastric fistula formed in the wound, through which Beaumont was able to view the stomach's contents during the process of digestion. During the next eight years, although St. Martin was often away hunting and trapping, Beaumont periodically met up with his patient to continue his observations. - Durchgeh. gebr. u. stärker stockfleckig, tls. leicht randrissig. N.a.T. - Beaumont commissioned a printing of about 1,000 copies of this book, from a local Plattsburgh, NY, printer (where Beaumont was spending a leave), and the quality of the printer's work was not very high; hence most remaining copies today are in poor condition. This copy with browning and foxing and some small marginal tears.
