Cartesianism had permeated the social and literary circles of Paris. However his close following amongst the Jesuits soon led to his works being put on the index of prohibited books, and in 1667 the oration at his internment was forbidden by royal order. A century later, this was remedied with this Eloge, given at the Académie Française. Thomas (1732-1785), a member of the Académie Française who is best known for his Essai sur les éloges, presents a detailed study of the life of Descartes, and analyses the impact of his philosophy on contemporaries and his influence on following generations, especially on Newton, Leibnitz, Huygens, Borelli, Malebranche and Locke. - Tls. etw. stockfleckig.
