"The Pastores de Belen was very popular .. A number of ballads, sonnets, villancicos, and other verses enliven a miscellany drawn mostly from biblical sources but also including a gracioso, folklore, and a child's game of forfeits. The plot concerns those shepherds who gathered in a valley near Bethlehem before the birth of Jesus, and ends with the flight to Egypt. The Inquisition found some of the interpolations objectionable (among them the story of Susannah and the Elders, and of Absalom and Tamar) and later editions were modified.
